Summary: Features include 1) a cup-shaped to flat fruitbody with a very dark brown upper surface, and with a similar color on the scurfy underside, 2) absent stem, 3) growth on the ground, on burned ground or burned wood, or on rotten cloth, and 4) microscopic characters.
Peziza sepiatra is found at least in BC and CO, (Larsen), Switzerland (Breitenbach), United Kingdom (Dennis), and Norway (Hansen).
Upper surface: 0.5-1(2)cm across, "flat and saucer-shaped when young, then plate-shaped with a somewhat projecting flaky and toothed margin"; spore-bearing upper surface gray-brown to black-brown; smooth, (Breitenbach), about 1-2cm across, shallow cup-shaped then flattened; disc very dark brown, (Dennis), up to 2cm, disc-shaped, blackish brown, (Hansen)
Underside: same color as upper surface to somewhat darker; furfuraceous, (Breitenbach), same color as upper surface; scurfy, (Dennis)
Stem: none (Breitenbach, Dennis)
Microscopic: spores 19-22 x 12-13 microns, broadly elliptic, smooth, colorless, without droplets; asci 8-spored, 260-280 x 18-20 microns, positive reaction to iodine; paraphyses cylindric, tips with clavate widenings to 10 microns, (Breitenbach), spores 18-20 x 11-12 microns, elliptic, smooth, without droplets; asci 280-300 x 16-18 microns; paraphyses straight, simple, tip rounded, 5-8 microns wide, (Dennis), spores 18-22 x 11-13 microns (Hansen)
